Turnover

Final Cut Pro turnover workflows — Conform Prep, Data Burn-In, and VFX tools

Turnover bundles the Final Cut Pro turnover work that usually gets stitched together by hand — conform prep, review burn-ins, and VFX shot tracking — into one tool, built on a shared FCPXML planning core.

Three ways to work:

  • Turnover Standalone — drag and drop FCPXML or a Final Cut Pro project into a compact native macOS app. No other plugin required.
  • Timeline Index+ — a native Final Cut Pro Workflow Extension panel (Window > Extensions > Timeline Index+) that reads the active project directly from Final Cut Pro’s own library, live — every clip on the timeline, playhead-following, CSV export, and analysis-cache checking, with no FCPXML export step. Bundled inside Turnover Standalone.
  • Turnover for SpliceKit — runs the full tool set from inside Final Cut Pro’s own Turnover menu, for studios already running SpliceKit.

Conform Prep flattens sync clips and does a conservative, video-only reconstruction of a timeline ahead of online conform — similar in result to detaching and deleting audio before flattening — while keeping the original timeline untouched.

Data Burn-In builds a frame-resolved preview cache from FCPXML, so review movies can carry exactly the data a client needs: source filename, source and timeline timecode, metadata, retime, transform, and VFX notes — exported as transparent ProRes 4444 overlays or burned-in H.264/HEVC movies.

The VFX tools round out the loop: VFX Shot List captures marker-anchored thumbnails into an Excel workbook, VFX Pull EDL builds a source pull list with handles, and VFX Auto Naming / Auto Marker / VFX Timeline keep shot naming, markers, and returned renders in sync across the cut.

Turnover is still a work in progress — some FCPXML edge cases (complex retime/speed-ramp combinations, nested sync clips, unusual multicam shapes) are known to need refinement. Work on a duplicate timeline and report reproducible cases through the GitHub Issues page.

Capabilities

Conform Prep

Flattens supported sync clips and prepares timelines for online conform, with a conservative video-only reconstruction.

Data Burn-In

Builds customizable burn-ins from FCPXML — transparent ProRes 4444 overlays or H.264/HEVC review movies with audio.

Timeline Index+

A live Final Cut Pro Workflow Extension panel — every clip on the timeline, playhead-following, with CSV export and analysis-cache checking. Bundled free, no separate install.

VFX Shot List

Extracts marker-anchored thumbnails from a reference movie and builds an Excel shot list.

VFX Pull EDL

Builds a source pull EDL/TSV with per-side handle frames.

VFX Auto Naming & Auto Marker

Numbers VFX naming titles automatically, and creates Standard, To Do, or Chapter markers from them.

VFX Timeline

Places returned VFX renders back into the timeline and tags them with the VFX Deliveries keyword.

Three ways to run it

Standalone macOS app, a native Final Cut Pro Workflow Extension, or a SpliceKit plugin — same FCPXML core, pick what fits.
